The AI Mirage: Why Healthcare Needs a Reality Check
Healthcare is chasing the wrong shiny object.
Although it offers great benefits.
Ai has the potential to revolutionize care but at what cost?
Let's start with the benefits:
-> better care
-> fraud prevention
-> 24\7 virtual assistants
-> efficient administrative workflows
-> precise self-dosage administration
The downside:
-> expensive
-> lack of interoperability
-> specialized skill to manage
-> security & privacy uncertainty
Simply put Ai will put less burdens on staff, giving them back time to work on more important tasks, increasing efficiency.
Patients can possibly receive safer care using more precise surgeries and accurate dosage administration.
Ai also has the potential to recognize suspicious patterns in insurance claims, such as billing for costly services or procedures not performed.
My challenge is the industry blames breaches on the lack of funding.
"We lack the funds for cybersecurity, they say."
If so, then how can they afford Ai?
It's more expensive, ai professionals are more expensive, and it introduces security & privacy risks that entities are not equipped to handle.
Not to mention the systems likely have interoperability issues, meaning they don't play nice with other IT systems. This is a current challenge with IoT devices.
This means more systems on the network that can't be accounted for or properly secured.
Ai will improve diagnosis and treatment but without cybersecurity patients AND their data risks multiply.
Now imagine a world where AI and security coexist. Good thing its already here!
This is where automation can help lean teams get rid of repetitive tasks and streamline process to make it a fair fight.
Not to mention when hackers start using more sophisticated Ai tools and healthcare is not prepared, the battle might be over.
The foundation needs to be secure before building the roof. 🤷
The allure of Ai should not overshadow the necessity of cybersecurity.
First we protect patients and their data and then pursue Ai.
Healthcare's future depends on balance.
Let's get it right!
